One would expect 6 as most countries in the Confederation of the Rhine were encouraged to use French practices. 4 Fusilier companies per battalion with the Regiment. Elite companies could be deployed elsewhere according to their French commanders. Also a depot Fusilier company left at home. I have a book I can look up if need be. |

A quote from Wikipedia: Napoleon used the occasion to change the organisation of the infantry battalions: their complement of nine companies was reduced to six, thereby beefing up the strength of the companies. |

Confederation troops were what my French figures were painted as when I started Napoleonics. I admire the diverse uniforms and accept their faults. I blame Funcken… |

I have some Wurtemburgers on order from Pendraken. A bit more accurate than using French figures although I would if I had to. Nothing wrong with Funcken in the absence of better sources. |

Battalion HQ 6 men, companies had 147 men. 1st, 2nd & 4th Bataillonen (Battalions) had 1 Grenadier & 3 Musketeer companies. 3rd Jäger-Bataillon had 1 Karabinier & 3 Jäger companies. 1808 March – battalions now had 5 companies. 15mm French were close enough for 12 year-old me in the early 80s Jim and I had no complaints about Funcken. It was the number of different armies featured which blew my mind. Far more interesting to me than the major players. A family friend photocopied some 19th maps of central German states for me and that was enough. |

P of E, don't you mean the Prussian system; Austrians had always 6 companies (except 1805 or 1806?) |

Funckens books popularised and made accessible to many youths and amateurs not in well paid jobs a lot more than Osprey, Almark, name your Yank… did. "in the absence of better sources." Even better didn't always mean accurate. Look how long it took to 'discover' that Martinet litho prints have been wrongly coloured in sets for years and unless originals, can be unreliable primary sources (which copies aren't). A visit with a respected 'insider' showed me where to find the real McCoys Disclaimer- Yes, I own a few from my French travels! d |
