Hi there! I've recently started 3d printing fantasy minis for the Mrs. and I, and was looking for a rules set that we could use. Preferably something that lends well to the diverse armies we are planning, i.e. Amazons, Deep Sea, Vampires/undead etc.

Pluses include pre-constructed armies, monster/character creation mechanisms and any other coolness I'm missing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Hal

What type of game? Skirmish, small tactical, grand tactical?

Warmaster is my game of choice. It's a "grand tactical" game, designed for 10mm figures based as multiple figures on a single stand. Three stands are typically combined to form a single "unit" (basically, an independently operating body of troops within a larger army. Think "cohort" within a legion for a visual/tactical idea.) Most battles will involve a dozen or so units per side. Units have specific stats for movement, attack, armor (defense), and hits. Some may also be able to shoot or have specific special bonuses based on race or faction. Turns are IGOUGO, but require rolls to issue orders to any specific body of troops. These orders can continue until one fails, and then the player's movement ends and combat ensues (which could trigger further movement for either side, depending on which forces win the combat— indeed, the opposing player could wind up making significant maneuvers on the "attacking" player's turn!) Once combat is resolved, things are tidied up and the turn passes to the opposition.
It's a nicely fluid game.
It's based on GW's classic Warhammer setting, so there's a great variety of forces one can use, and it's not hard to create original lists for it. There's also a Middle-Earth specific version called The Battle of Five Armies— but this isn't the movie-themed Hobbit games or LotR games, it's a 10mm boxed set that's sadly OOP. Look around, though, because the rulebook is often available online.

I'll let others post their own suggestions, but WM is still my go-to fantasy game, and a lot of fun.

Shadow Storm aka Fantasy Hail Caesar.

As always, comments are appreciated.

Take care

I agree, we'd want to know what you are looking for.

For small skirmish (small warbands of individuals), I'd recommend Song of Blades and Heroes (Ganesha Games0. I love the rules, but wish they would scale up a bit easier.

Age of Fantasy (One Page Rules) is large skirmish, meaning units are loose bands of 3, 5, 10, 20 individuals that aren't in formation. OPR also make a skirmish version for a handful of figures and AoF Regiments for when you want to march them around in rank and file and pretend there are more than they are. (I think even a hundred warriors per side would be a skirmish, but some folks use that now exclusively for the 12 or less scale.)

One Page Rules has a lot of army lists, and the point system for creating units is available to Patreon supporters.

Waken the Storm works well for us. And if you strip out
the Fantasy/Magic elements, you have a quite serviceable
set of medieval rules.

sorry guys, was away for a few days. So i was thinking of something roughly the size battles of WHFB, played with 28mm figures. Definitely not opposed to systems with larger, grand scale feel, i.e multiple figs per base.

im going to look through the suggestions above! Thanks

I'll add in one more for your consideration, now that I know what you are looking for: 2nd Edition BattleSystem, by TSR/WotC. They are available in hardcopy, on e-Bay, usually. The PDF is a good deal, too.

2e BattleSystem rules are comprehensive, with rules for converting non-standard creatures, troop types, and even battle platforms. It covers pretty much everything in both historical medieval, and fantasy medieval games. Knowledge of 1st/2nd Edition AD&D rules is not required. It can stand on its own, without the RPG rulebooks. It covers siege battles, siege engines, and such. It covers mining, too. There are rules for aerial cavalry, as well as flying dragons, and such. It is very comprehensive.

The rules are set up to roll one Attack Die for each figure fighting -- it is a bucket-O-dice game, but it is actually quite fun.

Heroes and magic are present, but they do not overwhelm, or rule, the game. It is actually well balanced, all around.

For smaller games, they do have rules for Skirmish units. Like I said, the rules are fairly comprehensive.

I've been playing it since 1995, so I have a lot of experience with the rules, but I do not use even their simple gunpowder rules, but they exist, if interested. Cheers!

Anything other than Age of Sigmar.

So i was thinking of something roughly the size battles of WHFB, played with 28mm figures.

I used to play WHFB and did enjoy it. Then I went into Historical gaming. About 1 1/12 years ago I updated all my old WHFB armies and ported them over to Kings of War. You will probably need to make new movement trays and that is all.

A free download of the Rules #2 is available for your perusal before you buy anything. Version #3 is soon to be released but you can stay at #2.

You should be able to use all your figures and shoehorn them into one of the KoW army lists. They were designed to do that…….mostly.

Here you can make free lists for your armies

Hope you like it. Armies are as big or as small as you want. You set a point limit.
