1/32 & 1/35 plastic models (Tamiya, Revell, Monogram, etc.).
Switched from military modeling for dioramas (mainly for extra credit in history class) to skirmish gaming using Featherstone's rules. At that scale we quickly moved from ping pong table to train platform to church basement floor, and Tractics rules.

Whatever scale those Airfix plastics from the 70s were. I used to call them 20mm, then 1/72nd, now….?

Glengarry515 Oct 2019 4:36 p.m. PST

1/72 Airfix… that's all there was…

Ragbones15 Oct 2019 5:18 p.m. PST

Not counting plastic 54mm Marx playset and Airfix HO figures my first figures were Der Kriegspielers Napoleoniques, 25mm or 20mm depending upon who one asks.

54mm Britains and Timpo toy soldiers. We played on the carpet.

25mm Airfix, Scruby, and Minifigs. I find it the height of irony that these figures are considered 20mm today.

15 for miniatures, but my first figs were 25(and they were 25 in '76)for D&D

I started with 15mm and after three decades it's still my prefered size – although my preferences range has grown somewhat since (20mm for SCW, 28-32mm for LoTR, 1/450-1/600th for Age of Sail gaming, 1/144 for aerial dogfights and so).

My 1st metals (in my very early teens) were 25mm Minifigs/Garrison minis. Prior to that when I was a wee nipper the old plastic Airfix figures (1/72 and 1/32)

25mm, then, five years later, I introduced my three sons to wargaming using 54mm plastic Army Men. Two of the three still game with me, using the Army Men figures, and rules. Great fun, since the 90's, for us. Cheers!

true 25mm

Asteroid X31 Oct 2019 9:38 p.m. PST

I was going to state 1/72, but then thinking about it, I'm not sure if was that or 54mm … Maybe both around the same time.

54mm for smale skirmish and 1/72 for larger battles.

54mm would have been Timpo, Britains, Marx, Timmee.

1/72 was Airfix and Giant, then Atlantic when they became available in Canada.

etotheipi,
Nice! Gave me a smile. :)

I suspect 50mm Plastic Army men plus a few odd huge ones 100mm I think. Rapidly followed by second hand Airfix 1/76-1/72 by the time I was six and some Airfix and Matchbox 1/32.
Those lead me to true 25mm Medieval them Fantasy Science Fiction to finally to 28mm.
