There have been several philosophies offered about the relationship between family and wargaming … from a useless distraction that makes you weak to the stalwart foundation of my hobby through everything in between. On a relative percentage scale*, how much does your family impact your enjoyment of wargaming? * – So, 0% means no impact. -50% means cuts it by half. +100% would mean doubles your enjoyment (adds 100%). While enjoyment, time spent, money spent, scope of different activities, type of play are all related, this is just asking about enjoyment. Feel free to break it down into components. Me +100%, at least. SWMBO organizes our game day and impels me to get off my duff and go out to play. She, DOM, and SOM all play. Right now DOM is 3D printing some stuff and painting some other stuff of mine, and I got to do some repairs and scratchbuilding on some Tau stuff of SOM. |

0% I have my hobbies wife has hers. We have some hobbies in common, wargames are my time and I have sufficient time I do as much as I want which is by no means all the time that would be too much. |

Wouldn't it be easier if o% means a negative impact, 50% no impact & 100% the proverbial doubles? I think you'd get more valid results if you cut the confusion of the question. |

0%-- the wife tolerates it and even occasionally appreciates (in an aesthetic sense) some of my painted figs or models. |

+75%. Two of my sons play RPG's with me. My wife has played, in the past, but she encourages me to play my RPG's and my wargames. One of my sons plays in my wargames, as well. Planning to buy a custom gaming table, with a lift system. Her requirement: it has to have the lift system, so she can use it as a quilting/cutting table for her fiber hobbies. Cheers! |

Old story but in 1977 on my honeymoon, I played in a 10,000 casting Napoleonics big battle at Fort Hood. Still married. So I will say no impact. |

-50%. Not because the wife disapproves or anything like that. But she and the two little kids take time. I can usually find some hours to paint here and there but finding time to game during daylight hours can be difficult. |

I'm not sure I could put a number to it- but generally wifey and family do tend to head for the toysoldier websites when christmas is on the horizon so its defo a bonus there! On the other hand I do get the odd complaint about tidying up my toys, or preferring to paint stuff than sit with her to watch celebs dancing or whatever that inane TV show she likes is about… If we reverse the equation though I tend to find my hobbies weed out unsuitable partners rather well- one lass after a few months of seeing each other decided she was in a position to declare that I had to choose between her and my toys… …it wasn't a difficult choice.
