If they are close enough, then I'd say this is plausible. We would certainly detectliving biospheres in that time, assuming that current observation technology continues to improve, and we are *still* able to launch satellites. |

That does not surprise me … Some say they are and/or have been here already … As I said on another thread here, with all the current documentaries, reality shows, news media, etc., etc. … I would not be too surprised if in the [near] future the US, UK, etc., governments will say … oh by the way … Aliens are just not in Star Trek, Star Wars, etc., … but … Again as so many have said, we'd be foolish to think we are the only life, intelligent or otherwise, in the Galaxy or Universe/Multiverse … |

The boom in science fiction mass media is said to be a plan to get people used to the idea of extraterrestrials to minimize freaking out when they make themselves known. |
Covert Walrus | 13 Oct 2019 2:20 p.m. PST |
Oberlindes, maybe so. However, percentage wise the media of the 1950s was far more SF orientated, and no contact was made. Also, we are at the point again in the cycle of " science vs. Public" on alien intelligence that we hit in the 1960s: Scientists support its existence and thus(?) the majority if the public dismiss it as implausible. The situation, again, in the 1950s was almost the reverse which seems odd but there you go. As to an organised mass media campaign . . . In this day and age, can you *really* see the varied media outlets in cooperation? And anyone who believes in a secret conspiracy involving more than ten people has never worked in project management :D |

30 years is less than a micro second on the cosmic clock. It could be aliens have already visited our planet hundreds of millions of years ago. It could be that aliens may visit our planet hundreds of millions of years in the future. The chance that the existence of the human species will be around during the same time period as alien visitors may be very small when looking at the timeline of the cosmos. But who knows. |

When first-responders are actually given training manuals, which weren't written by fiction writers, as to how to deal with alien encounters, I'd say it seems at least some in the government consider this to be a plausible issue. |
Covert Walrus | 14 Oct 2019 2:10 p.m. PST |
Thresher, really? Did not know that . . . . Though given how much time governments and such spend discussing and planning for all eventualities its no surprise. Often it helps formulate plans for everyday matters as well. Then again, the CDC has a Zombie outbreak protocol and has had exercises with authorities on the topic – but they aren't expecting ACTUAL walking corpses either ( The Rage virus of 28 DAYS LATER? Different matter entirely ) |

Yes, I had heard that there are FMs about handling ETs for 1st Responders and probably some military. I think those FMs really would revolve around limiting effects of Radiation, or even bodily fluid of the ETs, etc. It about not only containment of the physical but keeping it classified until a later time. Of course some say this already happened ? If you walk down 6th Street in Austin on any given night you will find that space aliens are alive and well in Texas. Hopefully if ETs land here in large numbers that won't need all the assistance that those who have recently come across the Southern border do. they may just be mutants That would be classified … Augustus +1 If ETs are found on a distant planet, most would still tune in to reality TV, the game, Kim, etc. ! If they land on the WH lawn … well … that may be something completely different … |
Covert Walrus | 16 Oct 2019 10:22 a.m. PST |
Legion4 and Augustus, some fair points. The likeliest scenario is that we detect strong evidence of life ( Not even intelligent life ) on some extrasolar world some distance away . . . And even so, while that might not excite everyone as much as an episode of "The Synthetic Housewives of Schenectady" or whatever, the sheer fact that life does exist elsewhere is going to make a lot of people pause for thought. It might be the kick in the pants that some people need to gain a little perspective. |
