… emotional benefits.

"When you stroll into your usual drinking spot this weekend, remember you are improving your life.

Because people who are regulars at a pub or club are more trusting and satisfied with life, according to Australian research.

They have broader friendship and support networks than those without a regular watering hole, identify more closely with their community, and they make friends…"

The research involving a survey of 1200 people …. was commissioned by beer giant Lion, and built on earlier findings in Britain by Dr Robin Dunbar.

Now that lends credibility to the study, doesn't it?

Speaking as an old South Londoner, I've anecdotal evidence on that one. In large cities, pre-electronic entertainment, the pub was the social gathering point. everybody in the area worked locally. Shops, factories whatever. Limited commuting. Local schools, families growing up generations in the same area. So of course they "identify more closely with their community" and they make friends etc, I'd never say satisfied with life though. Accepting, yes.

There is usually a place or two which knows my name and my regular order. There is no place which regards me as trusting of satisfied with life.

The only place that knows my name is the coffee stand at the local farmers' market.

The close second is the family-owned bagel bakery, where they know what I'm going to order if I come in for a late breakfast.

Although I did drink my share of beer when I was young, I never really developed a connection to a bar, and I never got into the habit of stopping to have one on the way home.

I'd say I'm no more or less satisfied with life than anyone else I know, and I'm fairly trusting.
