I'm intrigued by their double sided battle mats. I'm thinking of a desert and grassland double sides for some North Africa and Normandy projects I have.

I know their kickstarter just ended, but I was wondering if anyone had one of their desert mats and how shinny they might be?

It would be nice to only have to spend $100 USD to get 2 mats in one instead of buying 2 separate mats.

Thanks

The mats are printed on fleece and all the single sided ones I have a re pretty much flat, not shiny at all.

Yea, I got that, but I think I read that the double sided ones have a "satin" finish to them. Not sure if I want a shinny desert :)

Might be too soon to get any feedback.

I might just sucker up the dough for one of those WarSigil mats, but the idea of just folding up my mat is nice.

As Extra Crispy said, I also have several single sided ones and they are a nice flat finish to them. But did see where the double sided ones will have a satin finish.

I have one of their one sided desert mats and I find them hard to photograph. They washout in photographs. It looks like snow. Several of their other mats look washed out as well. Only a concern if you photograph your games. I'm wondering if the satin finish will help or make it worst for photography. I am not the worlds best photographer but my old mats do not have this problem.

I have the same trepidation.

I think their satin 'plush' mats do have a bit of a shine. I've seen some at game conventions and thought it practically glowed. I think it's the plush more than the satin, but I don't know. but I won't jump in the KS because I am not sure. I'd rather buy the regular mats and that way if I don't like it, I might be able to swap or return it. I don't think you can do returns on a KS.

I do have one of their mats, the dungeon floor one, and it is NOT shinny and I like it very much.

Someone from Cigar Box told that has been the biggest complaint about their mats, is that they don't photograph well. He said they were working on a solution. But I have spent too much on mats that I don't like.

Overall I find that these mats and other brands are garish for my taste. Trying to represent 3D objects as 2D is not a good look. In my opinion these types of mats are more suited to fantasy and sci-fi gaming.

I do have a double sided mat from their previous kickstarter for it, with rubble on one side and black space on the other. It is a bit more shiny since the double sided is more satin. It's not distracting, though on the rubble side (it looks close to desert, just with lots of blasts and craters- I was going to use it for WWI). The space side is really shiny though (but that's ok for me).

My single sided mats are all matte mats, so to speak. Not shiny.

Thanks folks

I think I'n going to skip the double sided mats (and their single sided ones too) and just pucker up and get one of the WarSigil mats.

Got one set of double sided shiny ones which are not really fit for 10-18 mm on top of that but better for 20-28mm. The details.
Of the joys of internet orders.

I have a Cigar Box cloth mat and like it a lot (not double-sided).

I've bought 4 double-sided mouse pad mats from Deep Cut. Really like them.

I wish I had seen this thread before we backed the kickstarter. Our mat came today and when we pulled it out of the bag right away we noticed the high level of shine. I am really disappointed considering how much I love the single side mat.

I have a single sided Matt cloth and one of the shiny plush ones. I really dislike the plush one, the colours are too dark and the fabric too shiny. Sad to say I've never used it.

My older, single sided mat is great, but it can look washed out in photographs. I've found halogen down lights can be the problem and alternative light sources are less of an issue.
