This is very basic stuff.

The question "How many slave states remained part of the Union during the Civil war?" is a little misleading. I got it correct [I could see from the options what they were doing] but counting West Virginia when it didn't exist until the war was more than half over is somewhat odd.

A lot of Americans now know very little about the American Civil War. I saw a Mark Dice video where he asked that question to a number of people and got some interesting responses. I told my 44 year old chemist friend about the video and she looked at me and said "I don't know who won the civil war" which quite shocked me.

@Rdfraf

I also recall watching a clip where someone in the U.S.A. went around asking people if they knew whether the north or the south won the American Civil War and getting surprised and puzzled looks from many who said they didn't know the answer or guessed wrongly. Staggering.

I agree with Quaama – the right answer is 4, West Virginia was not a state at the start of the war

I found the Mark Dice video. It's at youtube.com/watch?v=7oHwaSs0HsE. Quite funny, yet a bit sad.

Someone should do a "man in the street" series of interviews on the question of airports in the Civil War.

"Is it true that the Gettysburg Campaign was the result of the Confederates trying to seize the Union Airport outside Harrisburg?"

"Is it true that Robert E. Lee was forced to surrender in 1865 because he had run out of troops, ammunition or frequent flyer miles?"

I'd really like to see the results on that one. Actually, probably not.

I've seen that video before, didn't surprise me then either!

I once chaperoned a group of high school students to the Getty center (art museum in Los Angeles). One of the kids saw the sign at the entrance and asked if this was where Lincoln gave that talk…
