"Planetary Defense is relatively a very young field of engineering sciences. Here are answers to 10 interesting questions that you should know.

Why do asteroids and meteoroids collide with Earth? These objects orbit the Sun just like the planets, as they have been doing for billions of years, but small effects such as gravitational nudges from the planets can jostle the orbits, making them gradually shift over million-year timescales or abruptly reposition if there is a close planetary encounter. Over time, their orbits may cross Earth's path around the Sun…."

"A person on a planet is at as much a disadvantage against attack from space as a man at the bottom of a well in astone-throwing fight" – RA Heinlien.
The same applies to natural objects, due to the speeds and inertia involved.

I'm actually writing some planetary defense rules this afternoon, but defense against enemy fleets and planetary assault. At first sight I was hoping this was some useful research, but no. I guess having life on Earth is important, too.

Planetary defense against someone with a space fleet that wants to kill you is a pretty hopeless. But what if they don't want to kill anyone, just want to replace your political structure with one beholden to them? They only need to destroy whatever dirtside facilities can shoot at the landing ships. Then there's a little ground combat.

But threadjacking must be avoided. Asteroids bad.

Anti-grav tanks are your friend, when assaulting or defending a planet.

Why do asteroids and meteoroids collide with Earth?

They missed hitting Jupiter
