Hi lads this is a bit of trivia but you may be able to answer a question I have been trying to find the answer to for a number of years. In the 1813 campaign Macdonald's corps, the 31st Division of Ledru had a brigade of Neapolitan troops Commanded by a certain General de Brigade Macdonald. I ask you chaps is he a relation or not. As I have said I have tried for a few years to get a handle on him but without any luck. Cheers. |

A common name amongst Jacobite exiles. It would be fun if they were related by I also can find no mention anywhere of the marshal having a brother. |

I believe that Macdonald's father changed his name on going into exile. As Artillery man said, not a rare patronymic among the diaspora. |

He also had a cow and few other animals that went e-I-e-I-o I do believe |

No, the cow went 'moo-moo' here, and in numerous other places; indeed everywhere. Ditto various other animals in his care, showcasing their respective vocalisations. It was the anonymous source for the senior Macdonald's agricultural activities who included the mantra 'ee-eye, ee-eye, oh' in their account. |

Marshal Macdonald is the only one mentioned in the lists of Georges Six, so at least according to Six there was no other general Mac donald in the French army. May shis one was par tof the neapoltan army as those were the troops he commanded. |
Oliver Schmidt | 14 Oct 2019 3:45 a.m. PST |
It is Francesco Macdonald (1777-1837), born in Italian Pescara, so probably not related: link |

Jacobites went in for fancy names. Take, Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Sylvester Severino Maria Stuart, for example! |

@ Trajanus That name is up there with the legendary Charles Adolphe Faux-Pas Bidet link |

Great link Oliver and a Neapolitan indeed, according to your link even married to Caroline Bonaparte after Murat's execution, something I totally ignored, great to learn something new about the bonaparte family |

@ 4th Cuirassier Great name!!! Could have been worse, he might have ended up being called Bonnie Prince Bidet! |

Take a look at the siege of Tortosa in Spain in 1810 when the French Marshal MacDonald found himself dealing with the Spanish General O'Donnell. |
