"The small town of Odžak is nestled between the Bosna and Sava rivers, in the north of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. To the north and east, a handful of villages spread over the plains, while to the south and west a few shallow inclines lead into the foothills of Vučjak Mountain. Today the town is a quiet place, only worthy of note due to a large Bosnian flag — allegedly one of the biggest ever — that the town's inhabitants made a few years ago. However, in the spring of 1945, the last battle of World War II in Europe took place in and around the town…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

"This Was Europe's Last World War II Battle (After It Ended?" Fought between Yugoslav Partisans and Independent Croatian forces, the Battle of Odžak ended 16 days after the Allies had celebrated victory in Europe. The guns of Europe did not fall silent in May of 1945. Nice to think that VE day brought it all to a close, but alas it did not. Fighting among partisan groups and various national armies (and regional militias) continued for many years after WW2. There is nothing particularly unique about this battle,* versus the dozens of other clashes that took place in the post-war period. At least not to my reading. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) *Except of course to the participants, locals, and/or the Croatian nationalists. |

Worth noting that there was no point in surrendering. Read in Keith Love's Savage Continent what happened to those who were handed over to Tito's people. And Mark I is quite right--fighting elsewhere in eastern Europe went on a good deal longer than this. |

Given that the "Croatian Militia" were Ustaše – a group whose behaviour even shocked the SS – no wonder surrender wasn't an option. "Tito's people" had a justified score to settle. |

Even after the war in the ETO "ended" the killing & dying continued in may places all over Europe. Some looking for payback, some continuing battles as before the war. As well as many POWs, mostly German and Italian. Many did not make it home… ever. |
