Got myself a bit confused by Flank Support in DBA 3.0 (not played for a couple of years so rusty!). Can anyone confirm if the following are correct or incorrect: 1. Elements that give flank support do so even if they have an enemy in contact with their front. 2. An element gets only +1 for flank support even if supported on both flanks. 3. If an element is destroyed, elements giving flank support are not destroyed or recoiled. I think I'm confusing myself with old rear support rules. Thanks people! |

Flank support is one of the useful additions in DBA 3. Just so others know what we are talking about "Flank support factors: Some "Solid" elements add +1 when in frontal close combat in good going against enemy foot if at least one flank edge is in mutual side edge and mutual front corner contact with a friendly element. Spears add +1 if supported by Spears or "Solid" Blades. "Solid" Bows add +1 if supported by "Solid" Blades. "Fast" elements neither give nor receive flank support." Solid foot are elements that have 4 figures, fast foot have 3. |

We like the flank support rule, because it stretches out the battle line in a more accurate depiction of actual battle technique, BUT it seems to make Spear relatively too powerful compared to Pike, who still rely on rear support. Pike armies are now either powerful with very short frontages and vulnerable flanks, or else they are a thin mediocre line. The increase of Auxilia to +3/+3 compounds the insult to Pike. We are toying with a house rule to either (1) allow any Pike element to be deployed instead as 8Pk per the standard double-based rules (+1 against foot, so now +4/+4), and/or allowing Macedonian and Swiss, who had powerful Pike formations, to deploy as doublebased 8Pk and gain the full bonus thereby (+3, so +6/+7). |

To rectify this… On a tie… "Solid" pikes recoil their enemy… I addressed this in the last issue of "Slingshot". It makes Pikes worth while again. Joe Collins |
