"By the end of the Civil War, the Union's Armed Forces loss some 365,000 men, with more than double that in total casualties suffered during the four year-long "War Between the States". With such widespread violence plaguing the divided country, acts of heroism and bravery on the part of fighting men were becoming more and more commonplace. However, this same violence caused concern in the ranks of the Navy very early on in the war. Would enough men be willing to enlist for service, put their lives on the line for their country? Valor didn't exist until the mid 19th century? Could be a great book, but I hate that title. |

You are wrong. The MOH exists in three different versions link The crosses are also different. Navy Cross link (includes USMC & USCG when operating under the Department of The Navy) Distinguished Service Cross (US Army) link Air Force Cross link Coast guard Cross link Each service has it's own version of the same award. And, it goes down the line e.g. link . |

Valor didn't exist until the mid 19th century? Decorations for valor didn't exist in the US until the MoH. And even after the MOH was created it was the ONLY valor award in the US for a while, which is why a lot of the Civil War awards (originally for things like re-enlisting(!) or other, much lower standards than we hold today) were revoked. |
