Warlord doesn't seem to be basing their models. I don't know, that almost feels wrong.

I'd use 1mm clear acrylic sheet. |

Depends on the quality of the model? I'd certainly base those beautiful ships. A quick plastic ship without rigging – not so much. Although I'm sure there are folks here that will make those ships really shine (well beyond my skill level). |

Many years (decades) ago when I was playing this period in 1:600 we didn't base our ships. link
The construction method using the Airfix Victory allowed us to do this. link
I don't intend to do any of the new ships so couldn't say if you could get the same flexibility. |

Not sure, I assume it will not effect game play to base, But want to see the game first. All my smaller ships are on bases. Something special about a a nice model set in a realistic sea. |

Dan, I think it does affect play from what I've seen (like Cruel Seas it uses 'wake markers' at the stern to indicate speed and the turning template seems to assume unbased ships) but I am sure it nothing that can't be overcome. I found the Cruel Seas turning templates very imprecise anyway. I'll be basing as well, probably use a 'upscaled' Langton base size as that has always looked good. |

Gosh, that photo at the top of the thread looks SO ugly!!! All the ships are on rafts!! Uugghh! Honestly I think we play with miniatures for a reason, its the visual appeal. Otherwise we'd all use counters because its easier and cleaner. If you don't need a base why use one and if you do then at least make it as small and as unobtrusive as possible. Should also add that I'm still "on the fence" about Warlord and Black Seas. The ship models do look good and I will almost certainly be buying some if they make them available separately. The rules …. ??? … well, I'll wait and see, Warlord don't have enough credibility for me to buy sight unseen. I'll wait for some reviews. |

A quick plastic ship without rigging My understanding is that Warlord is selling the ships with rigging thread and rat lines. I like the clear plastic idea tho. |

I got my sprue with Wargames Illustrated and it does look lovely. I'll be basing, but I will probably be using another rule set. My only experience of AoS wargaming is Sails of Glory, which I do like. I might use Too Fat Lardies 'Kiss Me, Hardy!' for squadron actions. I am thinking that I will probably base the frigates and sloops on mdf bases which can then fit into the blue plastic SoG bases (they do fit – just!); I'll mark off the plastic base with the points of sail so I can either play single ship actions with SoG, or remove the plastic base and have a nice seascaped base on its own for squadron actions with KMH.
