It came out in 2001 and really set the bar for military simulators on PC.

The setting is 1985 in a fictional island group, you are part of a NATO force when suddenly the RUSSIANS ATTACK!!
And you get a real cold war crisis. At the start, you don't know what is going on, and you are part of several attacks, that in the end flounder as apparently there are thousands of soviet troops and tanks on the islands. You end up being the sole survivor of your squad and gets captured, only to be rescued by the local resistance.

You get ferried back to another island. and prepare to defend it. And THen the Reds attack that island too.
Besides Corporal Armstrong the main character you also control at times, Special ops guy, a tank commander and a pilot.

It's a great game and for those who like what if's cold war scenarios, this got plenty.

Now the game is ancient but is available to buy various places online.
However, there is an alternative, if you got ARMA 3(which is really Operation flashpoint 4) You can download the original OFP campaign to play in the ARMA 3 engine.
It's not perfect, as the lack of Woodland uniforms(American soldiers use ACU or Multicam ) which kinda ruin the cold war feel. Also, you have HMMWVs.
I have found a second mod that makes the Russians look more cold war Russians, but not one that fixes that Americans. But you do have the M16A2 without any optics. Also in the original game when you first play as a tank commander you start with an M60 Patton, and then later get the M1, but in this mod, you start out with the M1.

But what you lose in uniforms and equipment, you gain in a more modern engine, the sound is out of this world when the bullets hizz, Wizz and snap around you, or smack into trees and the ground. No games give a better auditory experience, and unless you've been shot at by live ammo, you're probably not getting any closer than in this game.

With large open maps, there is a lot of long-distance firefights. In one mission you are helping the resistance saving some civilians. And after resucing them, you have to run for your life, and when you're running up the hill through the woods and those bullets just snapping around you and hitting the trees around you are rather adrenalin pumping.

So I recommend either getting the orignal of steam or someplace, or if you have ARMA 3, get the mod.

From the mission where I'm helping the resistance.

I'm more of a battlefield commander than a grunt so I prefer tactical RTS's like 'World in Conflict' and 'Wargames' from Eugen Systems. Probably because they're more akin to the tabletop miniature games I play.

Friends and I used to play OpFlash missions online. Not any mods though.

Hi Gunfreak,

Long way back about 12 of us took over a pub and brought all out computers to set up around a pool table. We played Flashpoint with 2 groups of 6 over a LAN. Funny thing was we has 2 tanks each with a commander, driver and gunner if I recall. It was a blast with people shouting commands all over the place and having a wild time. Very fond memories of a great game.

One tank took a wrong turn and fell over a cliff!

There was also a STALKER mod before STALKER even came out. People had waited so long for that game.

Thanks for the memories.

Quite what the people in the pub made of all this wierd stuff is anyones guess.
