De un lado estaban los brasileros con 20.000 hombres, del otro, en el medio de un círculo, los paraguayos con 3.500 soldados de entre 9 y 15 años y algunos niños de 6, 7 y 8 años. Esta batalla es el símbolo más terrible de la crueldad de esa guerra: los niños de 6 a 8 años, en el calor de la batalla, aterrados, se agarraban de las piernas de los soldados brasileros llorando, pidiendo que no los maten. Pero a pesar de las suplicas, eran degollados en el acto…."
