"In October 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis threatened to escalate into global thermonuclear war. The United States and Soviet Union both mobilized over nuclear missiles in Cuba, and a single spark could have effectively ended civilization. But what's not well-remembered today is that at the height of that dispute, a lost plane near the North Pole nearly led the world down the same path.

On October 4, 1962 a U-S spy plane on a reconnaissance flight over Cuba made a disturbing find: Soviet SS-4 short-range ballistic missiles and SS-5 intermediate range ballistic missiles. Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev had jumped at Cuban leader Fidel Castro's offer to host missiles in his country, just a few hundred miles from America—and within easy launch range…"

Cuba shooting down one of our aircraft didn't help matters either.

Fidel was very upset when the USSR pulled out their missiles etc., from Cuba. After the Missile Crisis was over. What Fidel did not understand or many other nations like Vietnam. They were just fodder in the cause for the spread of Communist domination of the world. But as we see today, Russia, China, Cuba and even Vietnam are just Capitalist Dictatorships/Oligarchies … Just "playing" at being Communists … I.e. the guys at the top have all money

The really scary bit about the Cuban crisis was the tactical weapons the Soviets had in country the US knew nothing about. If we had invaded, it would likely have gone nuclear very quickly.

Well, the Soviets said they were sure. They had the MiG-15 drones they were going to launch if we attacked, along with IL-28s armed with nuke gravity bombs. The US knew nothing about them at the time.

Yes, the USSR had tac nukes in Cuban and IIRC the commanders on the ground had release authority. Was at a briefing by a former Army Intel guy then turned CIA at the time. It did get pretty "dicey". As Tory said, the USA didn't know anything about those nukes(!).

The USSR did have a lot of MBTs, APCs, etc. on the ground there too. I saw some of the no longer classified photos, T-54, BTRs, etc. Of course now those photos are probably online …
