"Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's hinting last week at acquiring nuclear weapons left observers envisioning how that might happen, including a possible theft from its NATO ally, said an analysis on Monday in conservative U.S. outlet The National Interest.

Joseph Cirincione, president of the Plowshares Fund, told National Interest reporter Matthew Petti that the threat is real, but not imminent. "If Turkey wanted to build a nuclear bomb, it could," he said. "It would take decades. It's not something that would happen overnight."…"

Yes, they could, but if they try, Incirlik and the surrounding area might get a major dose of man-made radiation too, in order to prevent that from happening, if ALL else fails.

All of those bombs should be pulled from such an unreliable "ally", immediately. Like 6+ months ago, immediately.

Turkey could try to steal the nukes.

It'd get a whole lot of their soldiers killed, and all the nukes in Turkey turned into paperweights with their electronics fried.

And may well result in Turkey getting nuked.

Erdošan may be a would be authoritarian dictator but I don't think he's completely mad or stupid – though never say never in the case of such individuals!

I'd guess such a 'theft' would amount to an 'act of war', and be followed very rapidly by Turkey's suspension from NATO. And it then being a toss up as to who got Erdogan first the alliance or a military coup….

Should it happen, my money's on a Russian Spetsnaz team getting there first, to get a look at US nuclear weaponry up close.

I guess Spetsnaz can eat laser guided MOABs directed by stand off US SF then.
