…a divided nation.

"Music is central to Ken Burns's new Vietnam War documentary, with an original score accompanied by samples of the era's most popular musicians, from the Rolling Stones to Bob Dylan. According to USA Today, the people interviewed for the film were even asked to provide their 10 favorite songs from the war years.

While it's natural that a historical film would include period-specific songs, music played an outsized role in the Vietnam War era. Whereas during past wars, musicians wrote songs to unite Americans, Vietnam-era music spoke to the growing numbers of disillusioned citizens, and brought attention to the cultural fissures that were beginning to emerge…"

Music from that time when I hear it brings to mind that very turbulent era … I still do like many of those songs.

Gotta give massive credit to Trent Reznor who both chose the period music and created his own soundtrack to accompany the Series.

The music from that time is very iconic and part of that war's history. And Burn's documentary on Vietnam very effectively used that music as did his ACW series with music from that war. The violin music at the beginning is haunting and evocative of the era … Every time I hear it. I don't know the name of it though …

Also as I said on another thread here.

"… USN PCF crews on one of my deployments to Panama, the CZ. When I was with the 101. And yes, as in "Apocalypse Now". They played "Can't get no Satisfaction" while cruising along the Rivers around the CZ, etc. Albeit in the movie there were PRBs not PCFs. The PBRs in the area at that time were a little farther "South" … The PCFs would insert & extract us along the rivers."…

And I don't think this happened but in the movie:

"… The MI guys & Huey Pilots rigger speakers on the birds and played "Flight of the Valkyries" too … When they inserted us into LZs in the Jungle during FTXs, etc." …

Sometimes have wondered whether the 'Apocalypse Now' 'Air Cav Attack' sequence would have been remotely 'possible'?
Even with a really good 'Tape Deck', given all the vibration and electrical interference… and would have needed MASSIVE amps to have been even faintly audible vs massed helo's!!
Oh, well, loved the movie sequence! lol.

I know we did it, in Panama, in the early 80s. Well our MI guys & pilots did … Don't know anymore about the technical end. I was just "cargo" …
