I did it before with spray paint and minwax polyurethane. It actually did work well but I think I should have spread my coats out. In other words, I did like 10 coats of each within the span of 5 minutes. I probably should have done 5 coats of each, waited an hour, did another 5. It's smooth but you can still tell it is 3D printed. |

This technique would probably work poorly on small prints with tiny details. It's basically using paint to fill in low areas, which would also fill in details made by scribed lines and tiny gaps. Of course, sanding small things is even worse, if it's even possible. I resorted to ordering only the hard, smooth materials from Shapeways (back when they were affordable) in order to avoid grainy textures and layer lines altogether. - Ix |
