… ISIS in Iraq.

"U.S. and coalition troops fighting the anti-ISIS campaign in Iraq have a new process for getting flights approved daily, following an Aug. 15 order from that country's prime minister that all use of Iraqi airspace would have to be pre-approved or else be considered hostile.

Emergency flights receive blanket approval, a spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve told Military Times earlier this month, but further details are now available on the pre-approval process for planned air missions.

Iraqi leadership now reviews a daily air tasking order with more detailed information about types of the missions, aircraft and operating areas for each flight, said a spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve…"

Same old bull crap. Time to bring the troops home and let the Iraqi government fight the remnants of ISIS on their own.

We handed over government control to them far too early, and you can see the consequences.

Should have done like we did in Germany and Japan, and not cede control until they were ready, and the enemy was eliminated.

I'm not sure Iraq or Astan would have been ready for handover in 2011 or 2013, or even now.

Which is no doubt passed on directly to ISIS by inside moles…

Correct, Lion.

Zephyr1 for the insightful "win".

When you take the cultural foundation of this area into account it becomes evident that self-rule is not a natural state in their culture.

You can't nation-build if there is no national foundation to build upon.

Agree with StoneMtnMinis. There's no 'Nation' to be built in that area.

The US should have split Iraq into Sunnistan, Shiastan, and Kurdistan, maybe keeping a US-style federal government over the top to secure any oil pipelines passing through the other stans. Or, hell, the US should have claimed the oil pipelines as ours by right of conquest. Want to mess with the oil coming from Kurdistan? You just picked a fight with the US!

And Astan should probably be split apart into the various Tribal areas, too. For that matter, so should Pakistan.

But honestly, Afghanistan would be a lot more stable if the US demolished the Pakistani government, and especially the various intelligence agencies. Because Pakistani Intelligence is the primary sponsor for insurgents in Afghanistan!

First thing we did wrong- Let the State Department run things right off the bat after the general "pacification" actions were ordered stopped. Second thing we did wrong- Let the State department run things up until today.

Want another shining example of their "work"? Watch what is about to happen in Libya and Algeria.

The saying is "You cannot have peace without first having stability." The (re)building of infrastructure earns the support of the locals. By not empowering the locals to build and operate local infrastructure and protecting same is akin to allowing the bad guys have the country. Remember, there is money to be made by the politicians who control the State Department (where many political appointments abound-not based upon skills, knowledge and abilities). THAT is the real problem if anyone really did just a halfway decent job studying why the whole area remains in conflict! A true wargame simulation if there ever was one!
