Having spent three years getting to know the battle of Talavera very well, as I built a collection of figures to run a series of games recreating it at a figure scale of about 1:30, I was really looking forward to seeing the place close up

This battlefield is not a typical one that would have been chosen by Sir Arthur Wellesley to make a defensive stand upon, but then he had never intended to be on the defensive.

Once key terrain is identified, the battlefield is relatively straight forward to find your way around, but sadly encroachments on key parts of it have appeared in the last two hundred years and it can be only hoped that future development will be controlled.
