The sequence does not have to involve guns or fiery explosions. Someone running from a collapsing building or sinking ship, or a chase scene are valid suggestions. I'm having a hard time deciding. But the scene in Die Hard 2, when John McClane fights the bad guys dressed as painters are one of my favourites.
And the bank robbery scene in HEAT I feel should be an obligatory options. The motorcycle vs semi truck chase in T2 is another one.

The fist fight scene on the top of airplane between Indy and the German NCO in Raiders of the Lost Ark rates up there for me. Does it qualify as an action sequence? |
Gunfreak | 02 Sep 2019 11:21 a.m. PST |
Yes, that is very action packed scene. |

This is a great topic. So many from which to choose. The climatic shootout at the end of Open Range. Spencer Tracy giving a well-deserved beating to Ernest Borgnine in Black Day at Black Rock. The siege tower sequence in Kingdom of Heaven. The defeat of Khan in the Defiant by Kirk and the Enterprise in The Wrath of Khan. Die Hard, virtually the whole movie but especially the scene in which John McClane straps C4 to a chair with the detonators and pushes it down the elevator shaft. The space shootout between Captain's Kirk and Sulu against General Chang in The Undiscovered Country. The Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. Aliens: the sequence in which the aliens attack Ridley and the surviving Marines in the administrative building, culminating in Vasquez and Gorman joining hands and detonating a grenade to stop the alien's pursuit. Aliens: Ripley rescuing Newt. Aliens: Ripley in the power loader kicking the Alien Queen's butt. The shootout at the end of Rio Bravo. |

Saving Private Ryan, all of it! and, does it have to be a movie? Band of Brothers. Finally after years of being a pundit they got it right and the German tanks, trucks, and half-tracks actually looked like German WWII equipment and NOT US surplus armor or obsolete Soviet armor (Return to Navarone)with an Iron Cross painted on it. |

The painter scene in DieHard2 shares a lot of similarities to the church shootout in John Woo's The Killer. Not saying that's bad… I like most of those mentioned and will add the shootout in the train station of The Untouchables. |

The firefight Heat, up the street, outside the bank is probably as good as it gets (minus the shot by Pacino that ends it). Final fight from The Wild Bunch is classic, as well. How about: -The ambush scene from Forrest Gump -The trench overrun scene from Cross of Iron -The final fight from Way of the Gun -The first gunfight atop the mountain in Lone Survivor (up to the point they jump off the first cliff) -The firefight in Chechnya in Strike Back (season 1 in the US) V/R, Jack - |

That's all most movies are nowadays, a bunch of action sequences strung together. Most are so over the top and unrealistic that they turn out to be real yawners. Some of the most interesting, and therefore the best, are from some of the older movies named before cgi. But as a kid, I think the snow battle at the beginning of the second Star Wars movie was so exciting, it had me talking about it for months. |

Too many great action moments The Last Battle in Excalibur as the knights come charging out of the mists. Zaitochi (too many to mention) The last gunfight in Ride the High Country. The fight between Deckard & Roy Batty in Blade Runner. The 3-1 gladiator combat in Demetrius & the Gladiators. House of Flying Daggers – the final fight in the snow. Leon – the siege Scaramouche – the sword fight in the theatre at the end. Ulzana's Raid – the ambush at the end of the film. El Cid – the joust/tourney scene. Vera Cruz – the last battle & the last gunfight. |
