So it has come to this a"fleet" is now officially five frigates. But the important question remains unanswered – how many Admirals does such a ‘fleet' require? I think we should be told! ' |

Better than an LCS, as this can take up to a 5" main gun and additional lighter guns up to 40mm, plus 8x Harpoons and a 32-cell VLS. Beats the heck out of the 57mm and 30mm guns on LCS. Note that this would be 5x Type 31s in addition to 8x Type 26s. |

Now that I'm back online: This still isn't enough ships to be able to have more than 1+2/3 Type 31s and 2+2/3 Type 26s deployed at any given time, and really runs into issues potentially having all the Type 31s stuck at the pier. It's a basic statement of fact that you should expect a ship to be able to make one 6-9month deployment every 18-27 months. 33% availability. That's standard surface ship and attack submarine availability. With dedicated design, two crews per ship, an immense amount of shore-side support, and not making deployments away from those shore-side support facilities(!), you can raise that availability to somewhere between 67% and 75% availability. That's standard missile submarine availability. And that is obscenely expensive, look at how much the Columbia-class or Dreadnought-class submarine programs are expected to cost. Those are the choices you have. |
