For excellent research into that important topic, see the work of Professsor Norman Roger Buckley, who has written extensively on the West Indian Regiments of the British Army in the 1790s-1810s. Rather, this post examines the a smaller number of men of color, often elusive and difficult to track, who served in particular roles in largely white regiments of European Armies…"

Oh goodie.

I didnt even realize the extent of the contribution of black soldiers in various ways during the American Revolution until I was almost an adult. Seems like most books skipped over the topic…a form of white washing? :P

Thank god for those Uniform Color Guide Series by Mollo et al that were affordable at Barnes and Noble booksellers etc.

Now, I treat myself to quite a mixture of complexions in several of my AWI units. Viva la difference!

The Spanish army of the WAS had a regfiment garrisoning their African possessions called "Africa" The illustration in a contemporary document shows the soldiers of the regiment as black africans or moorish.
