The mortarch model is pretty dame cool. I will probably get one of these even though I'm not that stoked about the rest of the line. It will work really well for some Mythology gaming, it looks like it would fit in really well with a Wargods game.

The regular troops are one of the big things I use to judge a new army. These guys are neat looking but don't quite appeal to me. I guess the problem is that they have done ghosts, they have done ghouls, they have done skeletons and they need something new. Zombies have been done to death. Excuse the pun. Vampires are tough to make a whole army out of, they already have them sort of and they are also a little over done.

So they came up with bone golems, essentially. A neat idea.

I'm guessing these guys might be able to be built a couple of ways, perhaps also as archers or spearmen.

The cavalry look very big, like Varanguard big.

Apparently the creatures are made up of the bones of multiple mortals and the souls also inhabit the constructs.

It seems from a painting standpoint that they should have gone all-in on the bone and even made the armour look like bone. I might get some to try that and see if I like it more. It certainly would make them fast to paint.

The wizard model is just straight up cool looking.

I could see him making it into a bunch of Necron armies with some minor conversions.

These things are sort of neat looking.

I wish they had done the two handed swords so that they had a hand from each side on each of the swords. So instead of having a right hand and a left hand sword they had an upper and lower sword.

I think that would make more sense from a movement point of view too.

There is even a bone catapult:

It seems like they took a lot of things that I didn't like about the old 5th edition Undead army and made a concept behind it to bring that stuff back in a more palatable way.

But the Mortarch is just cool, one of the best looking big figures GW has done this year, and his little retinue would be useful for all kinds of things.

The best part for older players is that it looks like a lot of this stuff has analogies in the Tomb Kings figuers so even if they never bring Tomb Kings back the figures could be used as the various Bonereaper troop types I would guess.

I'll look forward to seeing more of the line. It would be very nice if they had chariots, but you could probably count the Khemri chariots as those cavalry guys. The Deathriders are made up of "the souls of dozens of mortal warriors" so using chariots as them would seem to make sense.

Roughly the same size figures too.

A very refreshing critique.

I see Tyranids in there also.

Makes me think of the space jockey and his kin from the awful alien prequels.

Interesting stuff.

And those sword arms should be a breeze to convert, from the looks of it.

The slow conversion to unique IP continues. Maybe a human-ish faction to replace Bretonnians/Freeguild is up next?

I don't know about these as an army entirely to itself, for me, but there is some interesting stuff to use singly or as conversions. That catapult is either outrageous or outrageously cool, for example.

Definitely some potential troops here to add to my Khemri/Pre-VC Undead Army. Not likely I'll put out the cash for the characters but those 4-armed guys will be a nice addition. They look Ogre-sized, rather than man-sized.

I'm guessing they are on either 40 or 50mm bases.

Yogibearminis there is a cities of sigmar supplement coming out for the Empire stuff.

@Pictors—I did not know that. Thanks!

I'm in general agreement with Pictors here, though I am not particularly enamored of the Mortarch. The Necromancer will probably find his way into my collection, but I'm not sold on the army as a whole.

I quite like the foot soldiers, as they have an Undead Samurai vibe that I quite like – probably the choice of weapons and headgear. I'd possibly use them for a cursed Samurai warband, released from the underworld to wreak havoc upon feudal Japan.

Obviously, the paint scheme of the models does evoke an Egyptian feel, but that's just how GW have painted them. Once they're yours, paint 'em how you want…

Totally going to pass on these.

Just do not like them in anyway.

Not a fan other than the Spear armed Dudes which I might use for the Empire of Dust in KoW.

Definitely liked the old Tomb Kings better.

Not really my thing either.

Is the one Knight riding a mount with a chicken head?

Despite all the phenomenal detail in both the sculpting and painting, I'm reminded of comedian Dave Attel's line of, "Look at all the work and effort it goes into boring me".
