Gents,

A quick question.

I'm looking for the composition of Swedish naval forces in the Schleswig- Holstein War era ie mid 1864.

What I've found out of my Conway's is;

SCREW BATTLESHIPS
Karl XIV Johan
Stockholm

SCREW CORVETTE
Gefle
Orad

Does anyone have any other details of other ships that were in the Swedish navy? Particularly any transport capable forces to ship Swedish forces to Denmark…if Sweden were to (hypothetically) enter the war?

Any info on this hard to find detail would be appreciated.

Cheers

Happy Wanderer

I don't possess a copy, but David Manley's "Broadside and Ram – The Schleswig Holstein Question" apparently has some details for Swedish ships of the period:

From the supplement's description:

Additional data is provided for a selection of British, Dutch, Norwegian and Swedish [my emphasis] ships of the era that could have been "on scene" and may form the basis for a hypothetical game.

…But the stats given for the Swedish ships conform to the values of Manley's rules, and are not easily translatable back into ship tonnage, gun weight etc.

Gents,

Thanks for that tip. I've had a look over Dave's (typical) excellent work. His supplement covers both the 1864 and 1870 Franco Prussian war.

The Swedish ships in my Conway's do not show the bulk of the ships in Broadside and Ram…so I'm curious where DM got his info for the extensive list of Swedish ships he details.

Also, the Swedish cruiser Vanadis is in the Conway's but not in Broadside and Ram….mmm?

…so, Desperately seeking Dave….if he could perhaps furnish some info, or anyone else with such details, the mystery of the Swedes in 1864 might be a little clearer…
