It looks like several previous recommendations are no longer in business.

I can find flight stands from litko on fixed height bases with markers for altitude. That suits me fine. But how tall should these be to manipulate the markers underneath? And how wide should the bases be for stability?

I would recommend 5" hexagonal bases, and then buy telescoping antenna such as these to mount the planes on:

I use a heavy galvanized steel pluming fixture for my 1/72 aircraft stands. Embedded a rod holder in the fitting and filled the opening with resin etc around the rod holder. The steel rod I cut in various lengths….. and plane model has a small balance point hole for the rod end.
