I figured these are both one in the same to a certain extend, right? I usually use Woodland Scenics Fine Turf flock, but recently saw some of the Noch "scatter material" which looks a lot nicer. It seems to have a blend of colors (greens and maybe dead grass) and looks more 3d than plain WS flock.

Has anyone used the Noch stuff? How do you like it if you did?

Noch stuff is great. Probably the best stuff out there (that I've found). Having said that, I use WScenics stuff all the time as well. I use WS for big areas (covering game tables, etc) and then noch as the "icing" to really make the table shine.

Noch = Good stuff!

Noch is beautiful, but sometimes hard to find in the U.S.

Especially their larger summer-green grass mats.

Is there a website out there where I can see and maybe order that Noch stuff? Thank you.

Never mind, I found it:

noch.co.uk

gnomehome21 Aug 2005 11:55 p.m. PST

The site is noch.com

If I am not mistaken, the Ziterdes terrain line is actually also from Noch.

Techincally "flock" means "short fibres" (or a clump of fibres, hair and so forth) and "technically" only applies to static grass. It is (technically) misused, particularly by wargamers, to refer to scatter materials though.

If you look at the Woodland Scenics website though you will see they call their scatters "turf" and their static grass as "static grass flock".

Incorrect usage of the word flock isnt really a problem though, but its useful to know the difference sometimes especially when ordering online where there are no pictures etc. Model Railroad sites generally keep "flock" to refer to static grass but its still a common problem to see scatter mislabelled as flock – always therefore best to check before ordering if you can't see an image of the product or if it isnt clear what you are buying by the description.

Noch actually make (some of the) Woodland Scenics materials just that the WS products are inferior to the actual "Noch" labelled items (by design if you like).

Noch also make materials for Gaugemaster in the UK, so you can buy Noch original materials under the Gaugemaster label cheaper than buying Noch labelled products.

Noch also make the Games Workshop materials such as static grass, trees and so forth.

The best scatter material though is, without doubt, Green Scene scatter. It's ground-latex which is then painted with latex-acrylic paint. Thus its durable, colourfast and UV resistant. Important is the colourfast nature which means it will not leech colour like WS turf, other foam-based scatters and sawdust based scatters.
For us its best benefit though is its resistance to UV colour degredation: WS scatters have gone washed-out within 5 weeks of sitting in sunlight whereas the GS scatters are fine after a year. It's therefore a far superior scatter in all respects.

Noch, Faller and Heki are all superior manufacturers though and whilst less known Faller is probably the best of the lot in overall terms with Heki and Noch making some individual items that are better.

Antenociti,

How is Green Scene's service? Are they prompt shippers? And does anyone know of a U.S. supplier of their products?

Many thanks,

Brian

Should probably mention that I tried to contact Green Scene directly by e-mail, but their e-mail address was rejected by my ISP as being invalid, thus my questions here.

Very helpful tips, thanks!

They dont really watch their internet traffic much to be honest – most of their sales are done through shows, but they only attend railway modeller shows in the UK.

I'm not aware of any USA suppliers I'm afraid. Best thing to do is to ring them to place an order by voice, they are usually prompt and reliable – John may be away on holiday at the moment though as we cant get hold of him ourselves!

We dont list all of the Green Scene catalogue on our site but we can get anything off their catalogue if you do need things that we dont list as an alternative.

4Dmodelshop in London also stock some Green Scene products such as the scatters but they're a tiny bit more expensive.

Firstly to say (IMHO) that Antencoti's service and products have been excellent – and if you're in doubt, they even do nice little sets of basing materials so you can try them out on a few bases.

Secondly to ask Antencoti – Do you have any of the bigger bags of scatters in stock at present? I've tried ordering but keep getting the 'out of stock' message.

NoNameEither23 Aug 2005 4:00 p.m. PST

They will be in stock tomorrow… we've had a big restock and its just a case of bringing the shopping cart up to date with stock… i thought we'd done the scatters but obviously not!
