Why would Rum be so popular in the USA? I worked in the Dominican Republic in the last century, and loved to bring back "ron anejo," but have not had it this century.

Because it's tasty. And we've had an influx of people over time from places where it's distilled. Like the majority of food and drinks in the US it is a gift. I grew up with peroggi and kielbasa and tacos and carne asada and cabbage rolls and tequila and rum and Guinness and all sorts of things you could ask "why" about.
