I've never played one but was wondering if there are any that are actually any good.

Jousting, like gladiator fights or any toe to toe one on one are usually not granular enough or are too simplistic to be interesting. There often aren't much in the way of meaningful decisions by the player or tactics to take that alter the dice. They usually come down to single dice rolls and not any more interesting than the dice off resolving a melee in TSATF, I have yet to see one that was otherwise.

How about riding bikes at each other with brooms and garbage can lids! (As done in my childhood)

Some decisions are required there: the decision to set aside good judgement!

Funny you should ask, Gods Eye Games just released "Steel and Steed" based on their Gladiator game Sons of Mars.

Looks very promising. I just received my copy last week. Have played Sons of Mars gladiator game and I would highly recommend that, so I think Steel and Steed will be a winner also!

Check it out, lots of detail in these rules.

@Duecey: me too – same with sticks and lids.

A jousting game is probably best at a (mildly) detailed "target choice" level, with each player secretly pre-determining their lance position, target point on their opponent, and maybe other elements like shield position, galloping speed, and maybe subtle things like shifting the horse in our out from the rail (I'm just speculating, as I have no idea whether that might be possibility in real jousts). Think "Lances of Glory" as the concept— select cards for each technique, flip to compare, and roll the dice. CRACK! WHOOF! THUD! Otherwise it would probably be a bit dull.

Didn't Chivalry and Sorcery have jousting rules and all the etiquette that went with it? So perhaps turning it into a tournament over many rounds with RPG elements added in.

IIRC 'Knights and Magick' by Heritage had a pretty good set of jousting rules, but it is long out of print…

're the issue of White Dwarf – probably #215

Jousting isn't really about tactics. It's about courage. So it's probably going to be more fun and interesting as part of a RPG than as a wargame.

Two Hour Wargames just release a new one. I have not played it. Its more for campaigns, not one-off jousting matches. You start as a lowly knight and try to win your way up the ladder to fame and fortune.

As mentioned above we just released our knights at tournament rule set "Steel & Steed" two weeks ago. Inside the book we have rules for jousting, one on one combat, mounted combat, archery, Grand Melee, tournaments, etc. Here's a video link that shows page by page of whats in the book. I've also added a link to our website if you wanted to check out "Sons of Mars" as well. If you have any questions about the game feel free to ask.

I have seen a lot of jousting rules. I've never seen anyone playing them at a convention or store. I've never had anyone tell me a jousting game was awesome. Maybe there are great ones, I'd leave to learn about them. Meanwhile, jousting is kind of a side dish.

An activity best done for real, I believe…

Then of course, the horses sometimes have a mind of their own, making life difficult for the men riding them.

Get some armor, get two horses, two lances. Go to the park.

And there you go.

@Cerdic: Thanks. That was a great video.
