I tried Cruel Seas last weekend, and like all the other MTB miniatures games I've tried, I felt it plays too slowly. I would like to find an MTB game that feels more like a dogfight – fast turns, quick decisions, minimal (or no) chart looking and record keeping. Any suggestions? I have a copy of Schnell Rules for Schnellboote, but have yet to try it. Maybe it's time. This seems like a great application for a hex grid. Does anyone know of a coastal action game that uses hexes (and is also simple, fast, etc.)? - Ix |

I've always thought the Wings of War engine would work perfectly for PT boats. The system is already essentially 2D, the decks just need to be statted up. |

You might want to take a look at The Quick and The Dead. There is a quote from the description "If you like your naval games pedantic and chart-ridden, The Quick and the Dead is not for you. If you want to feel as if you've actually been in a PT fight, these are the only rules that give you that feeling. The game plays very different than most game you've played. Some players get the hang of the fluid, no-turns system quickly. Others have difficulty. I have found that by a player's third game, they get the hang of it. Many don't like the game the first time they play, but after playing a couple more times, really enjoy it. During play tests some have suggested that I should include an optional standard-style turn sequence. While players would be free to do so, I've decided not to include a traditional turn sequence, because then The Quick and the Dead would be just another game, and I wanted it to be unique." I bought The Quick and The Dead last night. That's a different approach! I've played turnless games before, and they are indeed fast-paced and absorbing and exhausting, so that might be a fun way to do it. Unfortunately, my pool of players for that game is probably pretty small. A lot of my local gamers are in the slowing phase of life. - Ix |

Does anyone know where to find the rules for Coastal Command? They used to be here, but the links to the rules are broken. - Ix |

I will second Dave's comments on the Quick and the Dead. I played it once and hated it. I waited a year and tried again and hated it. I am still waiting. It must be an acquired taste that I just don't want to acquire. I will say it is unique and applaud the effort. David, am intrigued. No one has come up with a great card game yet. Is yours a card game? Joe YA I use hexes for Cruel Seas. Each hex is 5cm. |

YA I use hexes for Cruel Seas. Each hex is 5cm. I was looking at doing something like that, but I'd probably start with Schnell Rules for Schnellboote. I think the sort of Full Thrust style of damage modeling has promise. - Ix |
