"Fritz Klingenberg was a German officer in the Waffen-SS who served with the SS Division Das Reich and was a commander of the SS Division Götz von Berlichingen. He was best known for his role in the capture of the Yugoslavian capital, Belgrade for which he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. In April 1941, the Germany Army invaded Yugoslavia and then Greece. Klingenberg, a company commander in the Das Reich division, led his unit to the capital, Belgrade, where a small group in the vanguard accepted the surrender of the city on 13 April. A few days later Yugoslavia surrendered."

Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to what weapon he's supposed to be carrying? It doesn't look like an MP40. From some angles it suggests a Stg43, but his outfit looks way too early war for that.

Good question….

I thought it looks a bit like a Thompson, except it doesn't have a foregrip. Not sure about the uniform. The tunic is quite short is it meant to be a M44? If so 17th SS fought the US in Normandy so opportunities for picking up a Tommy gun there.
Looking at the link there are additional pics and it looks more like a Stg44 and the tunic is definitely the short M44.

There's a photo in the link, not shown above, that shows that the weapon is meant to be the StG 44. Not a very good rendition of one. Or it's a Lasgun.

Or it's a Lasgun.

Well we do know that German weapons are easy conversions to more advanced weaponry. MG42's into Stormtrooper Blaster rifles and the broom handled Mauser into a blaster pistol.
