Way back in the past I enjoyed the Original 1st Edition of GW's "Space Marine" rules…. the ones with the black cover that tied in with the original Adeptus Titanicus set. Then there was the 2nd edition of Space Marine which I didn't think was as good as rules but then they did allow lots more variety in what could be fielded….. couldn't do that with the 1st Ed. Then there was the 3rd Edition now called Epic 40.000 which totally revamp the whole set of rules and which were not to everyone's liking ……these quickly died and are less easy to find second hand than the first two editions. Now I have come across "Horizon Wars" by Osprey and they have some similarities to that 3rd edition in many ways, being more of an overview of a battle than getting into too much individual detail. A bit of bookeeping, though, and the units are on the small side….. maybe one base as opposed to 6 making up an Epic unit. i have tried Dirtside 1 & 2 (didn't like the drawing of "chits" system) and also BattleTech (in several versions) . Also had a go at "Hell on the Margin", "Hellfire", and several others……. but I still miss those early days of Edition 1 Space Marine. Does anything come close that you know of? TTFN H |

Got a copy of the FMA version of Dirtside 2 (dice not chits) and the Full Metal Orge, saved from a website before it closed down. Another rule is: Command Horizon |

I'd second LaserStorm. Great set of rules woefully under publicised. Card draw for unit activation instead of Igo-Ugo, we'll done unit creation lists to make any unit you like or use ‘readymade units', plays fast and feels like a sci-fi story. Definitely worth a try from WargameVault. |

I'm surprised you haven't tried Epic Armageddon, Parrskool. It has a lot of the features of earlier SM editions, in a data card system much liek DS2, but with basic GW resolutions and rules – And some clever ideas, such as a bonus to forces firing on a surrounded unit. |
