I've been kinda looking at these rules by Sam Mustafa. From what I've seen is the game looks like it's a grid style of game, where as I'm used to Spearhead WWII, FFT3, Test of Battle type games.

Anyone every play Rommel?
How do you like them?

If you donīt have an aversion for "square based" battlefields, the rules are fine.

I play it in 2/3mm scale.

It's a very good set of rules; really operational level (a level up from Spearhead). Each square is 1km, and stands are companies, so only artillery has ranged fire. You can do even quite big battles. The system work really well with the Ops Boards giving appropriate tactics for each nation for different parts of the war.

I've played Rommel quite a bit. I do enjoy the rules and the different perspective from Spearhead. We play in 15mm and 6" squares.

Our club have a tough time with any modern rule set where one tank = 1 platoon or 1 company, so have not been able to get them to try Rommel. We got over the squares aversion, so I may have to have another go.

Extra Crispy – I had the same problem but was fortunate that I was able to swap to a different scale (to 6mm from 15mm) for this scale of game and then mounted 2-3 vehicles on a medium FOW base thus giving the perception of a platoon/troop. Everyone was then able to adjust their view and were happy to accept it.

I appreciate that not everyone will have this option. I was actually forced to buy new shiny toys, almost at gun point. I can give it up any time….I am not an addict…..I am not an addict…..

Ive had a knock about with them with my 6mm, and they seem really quite good. They go beyond the usual operational mechanics with some quite nifty ideas in the Ops File/Events rules.

My only concern is that I have spent decades building up my terrain collection. And none of it is gridded.

Some folks put down ceramic tile seperator +s (ugh!) but in 6mm they look ridiculously noticable.

Id like to give them more of a go. Anybody here got around the grid problem please?

We just marked the grid with black dots at the intersections. You can clearly see the dots when playing, but they're barely visible from a bit further back. There is a grid marked here:

That's a pretty decent looking mat there Rabelais. Is it one you made yourself?

And I agree about the dots. Not in your face at all, even with tiny tiny 3mm figs.

Rabelais30 Aug 2019 3:56 p.m. PST

It's not a mat. They're actually 120cm x 60cm boards made by a club member, then just painted and given a coating of flock.

Figures are 6mm Adler with GHQ vehicles. Bases are 60mm x 40mm.

As luck would have it, I have just released a video about the basic rules of the game. Watch it here:
