I'm trying to suss out the organization for this formation around 1984, specifically in the DIVCAV squadron for a heavy division. Applicable field manuals are either from 1960 or after the transition to the Abrams/CFV TO&E. Everything I've found points to one M113 for the platoon HQ, between two and four M113s with scout teams and sometimes a pair of M150s or M901 ITVs, and a tank platoon of four M60s. Can anyone with firsthand experience speak to the accuracy of this? Additionally, how were the scout teams organized as far as manpower, equipment, and armament? |

Page 3-12 of FM 17-95 dated 1981 has a cavalry platoon of one HQ M-113, a scout section of two squads of one M-113 and one M-150 or M-901 TOW vehicle each, and a tank section with four M-60A1 tanks. Each scout squad has 5 dismounts between the two vehicles. The scout M-113 carried a Dragon AT missile mount in addition to the .50c machine-gun. Total of three M-113, two TOW vehicles and 4 tanks in a platoon. A troop is three platoons plus a three M-106 mortar section plus a ground surveillance radar section plus the troop HQ. The suggested employment is two elements of one scout squad and two tanks each to give bounding over-watch. |

Thank you! I somehow didn't manage to find that particular version of FM 17-95. That is exactly the information I needed. |
