At first glance, this could be a wartime newspaper photo of Dutch soldiers defending a village during the German invasion in May 1940 … until you spot the figure bases, that is, and realise this is a wargames table with 28mm figures.

I've posted pictures of this miniature village and info on how I went about it, here on my blog: link

Here are some sample pics from the blog:

Did you do any modifications to the buildings or is this is how they look out of the box? Really nice set up. What brand figures are your Dutch?

Arteis0203 Aug 2019 8:50 p.m. PST

I did do some modifications, mainly to add more realistic windows and doors.

The Dutch figures are by May '40 Miniatures.

Even without the bases, the figures are a bit large for the buildings.

What a great project. This is so tempting. I saw that you can buy printed buildings in 1/50th. How hard would it be to scale these up?

Fantastic job. Are the buildings HO platics?

Thresher0107 Aug 2019 7:07 a.m. PST

Very nice looking buildings.

They appear to me to be more suitable to 1/72nd scale though.

Very nice layout and figure collection. I have been wanting a WW2 Dutch Landsverk armored car so I followed your link to May '40 Miniatures and find it out of production :(

The buildings would be dead easy to print out at larger or smaller scales. All you need to know is how to resize an image!

Personally, I prefer buildings with smaller than true scale foorprints for my wargames terrain, so I always go for a scale a bit smaller than my figures.

Afaik the landsverk is not out of production but out of stock.
contact May40 when they will have new stock

By the way, some people have asked why I use 1/72 scale buildings with 28mm figures.

The answer is that I prefer my houses to have a small footprint, as they then don't dominate the table as much.

In any case, wargamers usually play with underscaled trees, rivers and hills, so also having smaller buildings makes sense.

Love that last picture. We all know WWII was fought in monochrome, unlike the Napoleonic Wars.

Never mind the scale difference between buildings and figures. Compare the difference between 28mm figures and most wargame tables of waterloo. Let us say two miles wide, reduced to 1/56 scale….that is one large table
