Hey all. I've been really wanting to do a naval pirate game in 25mm. Does anyone know where I can find some ship design instructions to make my own ships? Some simple cardboard instructions would do. Thanks!

I made some scratchbuilt Pirates! ships. Unfortunatly, they aren't digitized... I simply took the measurements on the website and the overhead images in the rulesbook to make them. So get a compass, a protractor, a calculator and graph paper and you can make them...

Gary Chalk did an article for Wargames Illustrated a couple of years ago with planys for scratchbuilding pirate ships with plans and directions. It may take some searching to get the issue.

Look by Dixon Miniatures, they have both, ships and figures.

You could also look on Ebay or such for a pirate battle set from the Weapons & Warriors line, and, if you feel really adventurous, the VERY hard to find MB game Broadsides & Boarding parties. The latter's ships are more like 20mm, but look more realistic than the more comic book like W&W ones.
The local hobby store might also have some of those Heller, Airfix and similar ship models, so if you've got steady hands and a lot of patience....

Or you could just buy one from Eureka? They also do an excellent range of Pirates, including zombies and females. www.eurekamin.com.au

Waterline resin pirate ships in 25mm are sold by Dixon, Old Glory/Merrimac/J&T, and Flagship games. These are real ship models, but necessarily crude and rugged to handle being played with. The Eureka ship is an altogether different bird. It consists of 3 wide plaques, in the shape of a ship's deck. There is no height to it. The previous models are designed as moveable terrain. The Eureka model is a movie set to fight boarding actions, mutinies, etc on. The Eureka item is not compatible with the first group.

If you contact Pressman, you can get the Weapons and Warriors parts list and order as many as you want. Ships are @$5.00 IIRC.

the next time that you accompany your wife/fiance/girlfriend/friend to the store chain called "T.J.MAXX" check out the area in the store that has knick-knacks etc.

everytime i have gone in the last three years, they have had full-hull galleons that would be perfect in 25mm after you made a visit to the lumber yard and had them band saw the hull off below the water line. ( or you could saw it of yourself).

they went for around thirty bucks american and were fully rigged etc.

it actually makes me want to collect pirates etc. even though i have no interest in the period at all.

it just seems like such a good deal.

this sunday they had a 1/48th scale chinook (helicopter)
in wood on a disply stand for $19.00 usd.

i might head back and pick that puppy up.

thanks,
pat

The lead to Gary Chalk is the best for do it yourself in card type boats. There was an earlier thread that had the issue of Wargames Illustrated.

You could also try searching on "Ship Modeling" on the Internet, then check out the suppliers for model kits, plans and parts built at 1:64-scale, which is just about right for 25mm. figures.

Demonic - I have the Gary Chalk article photo copied. Shot me you address at rich@aspen-systems.com and I will mail a copy to you. I recieved this copy the same way by the way, begged a copy off somebody else, as that the WI issue with the article is impossible to find.
