"The Battle of Kurikara was fought June 2nd, 1183 between the forces of the Minamoto (Genji) and their rival Taira (Heike) clans at the Kurikara Pass in Etchu Province, modern day Toyama Prefecture. The Minamoto used superior tactics against the enemy, tricking, surrounding and defeating them using herds of flaming torch-fitted cattle as a secret weapon.

The Battle of Kurikara was a major turning point during Japan's protracted conflict between the two clans, leading to the fall of the all-powerful Taira, and the rise of the Minamoto clan, who would go on to become Shogun…."
