Great film. Does anyone know what the flag looks like or what the motto says on the School's flag?
YouTube link
I suspect it says "Jefferson Military Academy" and then "Established" |

It is totally imaginary. The students at the Jefferson College, Natchez, MS were not involved in the pursuit of Grierson's raid. In fact the school was closed during the Civil War. link For a good historical account of the raid, may I suggest The Real Horse Soldiers by Timothy Smith. link I've read it and heard the author speak about it. I can heartedly recommend it. Jim |

@ColCampbell Thanks for the recommendation. I realize it is a fictional unit but I was interested in doing it up for tabletop ACW games; sort of a fictional-historical unit if you would. Although, I could obviously make up the flag too, was just curious if anyone had ever mapped out the flag. I might buy the movie and try to take enough snapshots to make out the details. Actually it might say "Jefferson Military College" and not "Academy" Or it might say "Jefferson Military Academy" on top "College" in the center and "Established 1807" at the bottom The things I do for fictional accuracy. |

Looks like they carried more than one flag in the movie.

If it was me I would check with the historic site which is run by the state of Mississippi. You maybe able to use the schools actual flag as a model. Which the one in the movie is probably based on. I would also check with AFI and the studio's prop department. You would be surprise at what lurks about in an old prop department. link Historic Jefferson College: info@historicjeffersoncollege.com, 601-442-2901

We got that, Contemptible--a rectangular version of the Battle Flag, a Second National and the third one is the source of the fuss, since it's (a) fictional, and (b) the only one you couldn't download and print out in five minutes. If I were doing the unit, it's certainly the one my troops would carry. It pretty clearly has "Jefferson Military Academy" across the top. I'd do "Established [whenever] in the middle and make up a Latin motto, but there's something to be said for imitating the historic college. |

I got ahold of a good HD print of the film Top row with slightly arced words "Jefferson Military" Middle Row, straight letters: "College" Bottom row, straight letters: "Established 1802" Watching the scene from the film where the Confederates de train and charge down the street only to be cut down, really drove home the amount of waste in that war. Sad really but I suppose it's part of the period's fascination. |

If only war could be a few bangs then a rousing charge. |

I used to tell them in the army that rifling the muskets put us on a slippery slope. Once you get minie balls or breechloaders, it leads inevitably to cased colors, dismounted cavalry and uniforms the color of mud. |

The US Army didn't stop carrying colors into battle until 1902--and there was a great deal of argument about that! |

The French were carrying flags in 1914. |

Pretty sad confederate flags. Could they have found cheaper dime store polyester flags? Still, though, one of my favorite movies. |
