a mile above all others when it comes to work well, fun to play and easy to pick up: 1-48TACTIC
everything else is just sluggish and boring by comparison… :)
it's a very fast-paced skirmish scale WWII game, which uses an innovative system based on stat cards and tokens to produce a brutally realistic simulation without tables, accounting, etc… The rules are available for free, including some cards and all tokens needed… there is also some awesome how to play video, check them out: YouTube link 1-48tactic.com

OK. Now, is there anybody out there, without a connection to this company, who can review these rules objectively? Also, can one play it in a scale other than 1/48? Lastly, a trip to the site reveals the need for alot of markers and tokens. I assume one can make up one's own? |

Well I could say the same about my rules and you can play in many scales and the markers are included. Cheers! |

Also, is there an objective reviewer who might suggest the best beer? |

They look interesting and the Youtube videos are pretty good to show mechanics. Wargame Vault has them at 18.50 USD for PDF. Seems a bit steep when the video shows them on the back of a poster included with the boxed sets of minis. It does state the PDF allows you to print all tokens and cards though. |

Albert Blithe from Band of Brothers appears to be the cover boy on the rulebook. |

Can't name the best beer now, but I'll put better than even money of it being from Germany, since, well, they have pretty strict laws and regulations about its production. Leopard beer, produced in NZ used to be my favorite, but alas, is no more, last time I checked. Watching for more info about the rules recommendations with interest. |

I haven't had Leopard Beer for ages. Much to my surprise a restaurant was selling Stein-lager Dry a couple of years ago so it might still be available. |

I vote for DBA. This is a simple to play game that you can do over your beer and pretzels in an hour. The units can easily represent squads as well as armies |

Good Beer and Pretzels rules are a holy grail few have achieved. The simplest rules I am aware of are KISS Rommel and Megablitz, but I am uncertain how they play as they simplify things down to a level which sucks all the flavour out of the period. The old WRG squad level rules from the 1970's are simple and play reasonably well, but quickly bog down when infantry dismount. This is a result of its scale, at 100 seconds a game-Turn, once you are in action not much movement actually occurs. Gene McCoy's Wargamers Digest WW2 rules are very simple, but not complete. I attempted to complete them and called it Kriegsspiel-Zusammenfassung and they are reasonably fast play rules, but a lot more complex then KISS Rommel's. Flames of War are a basic and simple game system, but the rules are very long and I am not a big fan, but they represent the best example of the optimal playability and realism balance. I find LWRS a very good balance as well and I suspect Panzer Korps is good as well, but apart from the actual rules you need a lot of supporting stuff to make setting up the game as simple as the game system. So a lot of good rules fail I that department. A good test is how long does a meaningful game last. If you can setup, complete an enjoyable game, and pack up within 3 hours you have probably achieved the Holy Grail. This allows you to have two games within a day, or if a competition, 3 games in a full day. |

If we are talking about the same rules by Buck Sardu all I can say about them is that I recently purchased them thinking they would be a simple few pages of rules and fun to play. What I got was like 100 pages of tiny print rules with all kinds of different mechanics which is in my view contrary to the title of the rules. I wont bother reading tiny print especially pages and pages of it. Just give me the rules and a qrs and thats all I want. If you have to spend pages explaining stuff then the rules are more complicated than I like to play. |
