Interesting. In my recent readings about American involvement in WW1 Western Front, there were several instances of American divisions being deployed next to French African colonial divisions and even French African colonial divisions being incorporated into the American 1st Army as part of French corps.

Part of the assault force at "Belleau Wood" was African colonial troops alongside the US Marines.

An almost forgotten "contribution" of Africans was as carriers. The various belligerents conscripted 1,000,000 men to serve as carriers for the armies. Around 100,000 men died of illness.
