Occasionally the question of what Twilight 2000 is and if it is any good arises on this board. As I can't play miniatures games at the moment I have been playing a few RPGs recently, so here is my take on it: link

We played the original version for a while and we never understood the claims of the "deadly combat system"

A reasonably healthy soldier could take three 7.62x51 bullets in the chest and feel mildly inconvenienced. It took three or four "three round bursts" to push a PC into considering lying down for a few moments.

Must have been a North Korean knockoff or something, everyone in the group read it back to front and couldn't figure out how anyone other than somebody who had only ever played a level 36 fighter in D&D could conclude it was a deadly combat system.

Yes. All things being relative! It was much more deadly than the "padded sumo" that is Shadowrun first edition, but nowhere near as deadly as Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, for example. Amongst similar games, it was somewhat less deadly than Recon.

That said, in the play example game I wrote up, one of the Polish gang members was killed outright first shot by the USMC sniper.

The original T2000 rules were rather clever in regards to characters. Since they had hit points for multiple body locations they tended to get wounder rather then die. NPCs having only one Hit Point pool tended to die.

My friends and I had Recon in the '90s. It sucked so much in retrospect, the drawings, the combat system, the writing, the encounter tables. I got a copy of T2000 a few years ago and the illustrations alone are amazing. The writing and combat system are so much better. I wish we had had it in the '90s. Now I have no friends though. I tried introducing it at a gaming group but all they will play is Pathfinder. I never had friends and a good game at the same time. So many regrets in my life.

I tried T2000 in the original boxed set and in the later yellow book version. My opinion is it has great background fluff and a wonderful concept. I hated the system so much. I seem to recall it was a logarithmic system that made little sense to me as a youngster.

Later when I was in college, we tried it again. I still hated the system, but I had the exact opposite experience as Patrick R. I recall PCs dropping like flies in the very first firefight. Considering we spent hours generating characters and vehicles and coming up with a concept for the characters, this was disappointing.

We never played again.

You made poor choices. listen to AAC's podcast using T2000, they play it the way it was meant to be played. They are ultra careul, kill everyone and everything in sight and their party is still alive today (in 198X) to speak for it..
