What's the best birth to death bio on Lincoln out there?

Although focusing much more on his political life "Team of Rivals" is an excellent book. It does have background on his life before politics but not nearly as detailed, more a primer.

I thought Ronald White's "A.Lincoln: A Biography" quite good.

And here's a good list from GOODREADS:

If great writing is a consideration, nothing beats Carl Sandburg's biography.

Not biography, but "The Unpopular Mr. Lincoln" puts his presidency into context and undoes some of the worst hagiography, while also building the case for how much he accomplished in the face of so much opposition.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire hunter.
The only true biography.

As Ammianus's list shows, there are many great biographies of Lincoln. David Herbert Donald's book is a great birth to death traditional bio. His book, Lincoln Reconsidere, I read in college whenDonald and I were both much younger, and it's a solid critical analysis of Lincoln's legacy. Good stuff. Lincoln the War President is a collection of essays by Prof. Gabor Boritt as part of the annual Gettysburg Lectures that feature prominent Civil War historians on an annual theme. Recommended
