Walt Whitman is known as one of the greatest American poets of the 19th century and played a role in America's Civil War that made him not just a great poet, but great American. Whitman's 'role' in the ACW ??? I was taught (in
elementary school in NJ) that he was a volunteer
hospital attendant. He died in Camden, NJ, not
too far from where I lived as a child.

Perhaps he had a greater 'role' ???
