Just came across Altar of Freedom; while BBB intrigues me, I really like the command system in AoF.

Are there published variants or informal adaptations of these rules for contemporary European conflicts (Crimean War, Risorgimento, Austro-Prussian, Franco-German)?

Thanks!

Nothing "official," but I've heard of guys using the system for Franco-Prussian and Napoleonic with house tweaks.

Tell me more about these "house tweaks"?

That is what I'm interested in as well; while I imagine the rules can be used "as-is" for Crimean and Risogimento (mostly smooth-bore percussion cap muskets) up through the Austrians in 1866 (muzzle loading percussion rifles), but new rules will be needed for the Dreyse and the Chassepot. Ditto with the breechloading artillery.

I like the system a lot, and am hoping to be able to develop it further.

Can you just bolt on a ranged musketry/artillery combat system to the rest of AoF?

Just a thought.

One of the problems is that the Dreyse didn't have range; it had rate of fire. The same thing applies, I think, ti breechloading artillery. Practical range for weapons was usually well below their theoretical range. So it is more a question of calculating increased rate of fire and accuracy. I can come up with things myself; I'm just curious what others had done, if anything.

That's why I like BBB, it is already done for you and a well supported Yahoo Group ;-) AoF does look good, exact same scale of game and written by one of the chaps in Little Wars TV.
