Would people be interested in a Renaissance Warfare magazine.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP09 Jul 2019 12:44 p.m. PST

I would pick up issues with short rules, descriptions of battles I didn't already know about or scenarios. But the odds are I wouldn't subscribe.

Phillius09 Jul 2019 1:49 p.m. PST

Definitely.

MSU John09 Jul 2019 1:52 p.m. PST

I'd be interested

Yes

Grelber09 Jul 2019 3:28 p.m. PST

I'm with Robert--I'd buy individual issues that caught my eye, but wouldn't subscribe.

People bitch but load it with eye candy.

Dukewilliam09 Jul 2019 7:02 p.m. PST

Yep

I'd be interested only if the scope of the magazine was broader than just England, France, Italy, Spain…these types of magazines, and I'd include the Medieval Warfare magazine in that category, just recycle the same topics mostly germane to Western Europe and ignore the rich military history of Central Europe. Central Europe includes Poland, Bohemia, Hungary and further south into the Balkans. Sure sometimes you see the odd article about Nevsky and the 1241 stuff, but I suspect that is the result of interest in the Teutonic Knights rather than the Rus, who were comparatively fairly minor players in medieval history. More of a factor in the renaissance period. I understand there is far more subject matter available in English for the west so it would take some effort to produce the articles.

I want to do the Deluge, 80 Years War, Thirty Years war, ECW, Cossack Wars any and all of it if I can. It comes down to time and money.

AussieAndy09 Jul 2019 7:54 p.m. PST

Yes. Unless it was complete rubbish, I would subscibe.

Dan Cyr09 Jul 2019 8:17 p.m. PST

Yes.

Rich Bliss09 Jul 2019 8:36 p.m. PST

Renaissance is probably the only period which I would be interested in subscribing to.

DisasterWargamer Supporting Member of TMP09 Jul 2019 9:41 p.m. PST

Sure

Definitely, though I fear that Wargamers have a different approach to the term "Renaissance" then Historians.

Imho events of the 17th century should not be consideres as part of the "Renaissance" (even when this board tells us otherwise). It seems that the term is used different in the English speaking community – eg. the English wikipedia page is the only one that pushes the range of Renaissance into the 17th century, all others I know use the 16th.

The focus would definitely need a definition, to not disappoint the one or other faction. "Early Modern History", from the 1500 onwards, or the transformational aspects that for western Europe meant the change from feudal armies to the state armies, as represented by the first Ordonnances of the French to the Oranian reforms of the Dutch army (~1440-1600).

I would give it a shot either way, though.

Eleve de Vauban Supporting Member of TMP10 Jul 2019 5:04 a.m. PST

I would like that – I would buy one or two issues to check it before committing to something longer term – but yes I'm interested. Also, it must cover Middle East, Ottoman, Persian, Mameluk Egypt.

The Beast Rampant10 Jul 2019 10:26 a.m. PST

Renaissance is probably the only period which I would be interested in subscribing to.

Here, too.

corona6610 Jul 2019 12:05 p.m. PST

If the notion of Renaissance runs from 1495 through the Great Northern Wars then yes, I'd be interested.

Waco Joe10 Jul 2019 1:10 p.m. PST

Throw in an occasional article on the early gunpowder empires of the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals and you would have me.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP10 Jul 2019 3:48 p.m. PST

I'd be interested in the early period enough to give it a try.

Robert Burke10 Jul 2019 4:44 p.m. PST

In addition to the Ottomans and the Persians, you could include India (Mughals), China, Japan, and Korea. The Japanese invasion of Korea in the 1590s is fascinating period.

The Italian Renaissance began in the 1300s so that could be your starting point.

bigdennis10 Jul 2019 8:24 p.m. PST

It sounds like a great idea. I would support it.

Costanzo110 Jul 2019 10:34 p.m. PST

Yesss!!!

KeepYourPowderDry11 Jul 2019 11:18 a.m. PST

How would it differ from the Pike and Shot Society's journal Arquebusier?

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP11 Jul 2019 2:16 p.m. PST

My interest in this period revolves around the Americas.

dusty 56214 Jul 2019 6:43 a.m. PST

Yes please

3AcresAndATau14 Jul 2019 1:56 p.m. PST

I would want something with some non-military articles as well, but that's just me. I'd prefer and "Early Modern Warfare and Political History" style publication.

WKeyser15 Jul 2019 1:50 a.m. PST

I would also subscribe but only if it was epublished.
