I've been watching a lot of painting tutorials of late, but I do wonder the reality of their implementation amongst mortal gamers? Please help sate my curiosity by responding to my little poll: strawpoll.com/9efwwxyp I have in mind I'll write something in relation to this subject and the poll in due course. I know for a fact I operate on a very spartan paint set up compared to most gamers and painters, yet I think I get decent results, so it will be interesting to see what develops of this…. |

Dean, I went for "Army standard" but none of them quite fit any one scale or period, let alone all of them. What I regard as good technique on a 28mm Wars of the Roses knight doesn't much resemble how I'd paint a Napoleonic hussar in the same scale. 6mm WWII is different again, as is 2mm ACW. And 1/72 soft plastics are almost a different hobby. For me, black priming--especially above 15mm--usually means (a) I'm painting a horse, (b) the figure is wearing armor, or (c) I'm in a hurry to get this stuff off the painting table and get back to the good stuff. But you seem to rate it more highly than that. I'd recommend narrowing the poll a bit--say to 28mm figures--and perhaps focusing a bit more on the number of passes over a figure rather than the colors used. Anyhow, I'll be interested in reading your conclusions. |

None of your choices matched what I typically do for 25mm, which is: Spray prime in flat white Spray major base coat (e.g., pants and jacket) Brush wash for major base coat (usually just a darker shade) Brush figure base base coat Brush minor base coats (e.g., boots, weapons, headgear, face) Brush wash minor base coats Fine brush details (e.g., insignia) Dry brush major base color Dry brush minor base colors Dry brush figure base Matte finish |

Nicely done, Oberlindes. Usual procedure for a Horse & Musket 28mm here is Spray paint men in flat white and horses--other than grays--in flat black. Horses are then painted with tube acrylics, highlighted and washed as necessary, and then horse furniture brush painted. [Earliest point at which riders may be attached to horse.] Men are given a thin dark brown wash, then painted painted "skin out" except that hands are done after weapons, and all metalwork painted black. This is followed by dry-brushing as deemed necessary for highlights, and always by wash. [Latest point at which riders must be attached to horses.] Casting is then given a spray varnish "satin" Casting is then based, grassed and metallic colors added. Casting is then given a second spray clear-coat in matte. |

I pretty much do as Oberlindes Sol LIC does some times I leave out the dry brushing. |

I try to replicate Kevin Dallimore/Steve Dean style with multiple layers blended together. Graham W |

I'm with oberlindes and FusilierDan, except basic uniforms, equipment, and some finer fixings such as lace. Little or no dry brushing and no shading except for a final blackwash to make the details "pop", gives it a look like "black lining" without the eyestrain. My painting has been all 15mm, or micro-armor, with an abortive attempt at 25s many years ago. |

I chose Army Painter Standard but that isn't really accurate as I don't dip but do ink/wash and highlight. |
