Zero is not an allowed response. Nor is 1 or 2. |

16 is good for the world cup -- soccer For DBA with 6 hours to play in a single day. 4 pools of 4. Three preliminary matches, winners move on to semi-final. Wargames do not have the time the WC has for rounds of 16-8-4-2. A single elimination event, such as the "Midnite Madness" once had 64 players. That was 6 hours.
Point based events, that play with Swiss Chess format, could have up to 24 for a day's play, I have not ever run an event for a big game tournament where games take 3-4 hours

12 I was a competitor I think in that Mid-night madness tournament that Bob mentioned. In the semi-finals… my competitor and I were trying to bribe one another to lose… so we could go to bed! I think I lost… or took the bribe! What is clear is that it was 2am in the morning. That part sticks with me! LOL! Good times! Joe Collins |

I think the biggest I played in was the World championship event at Melbourne University back in 2005 (before ancients went multi choice). Memory tells me that was at least 150 players. These days, 24 is a result* My rule of thumb is just never to turn a player down. Phil Ancients on the Move *in the UK at least, numbers are still healthy just the choice is much wider (so instead of getting 100 players playing the same game, you get the same number split over 5 or 6 choices) |

minimum ( sides per game ^ floor ( time available / ( time per game + intergame interval ) ) * players per side , number of refs / gamee each ref can monitor ) |

Zero is not an allowed response. Why not? It means that tournaments are pointless. Zero. |

MajorB, To most people in the world, war gaming is itself pointless. Is there really a need for any of us within the community to denigrate others? Competitive play among wargamers has been with us for a long time. Many of us enjoy this facet of the hobby. There are many positive aspects to it: meeting new gamers on a one to one basis, expanding our knowledge of various armies by acquiring new ones to try out, stretching our minds to find new game tactics to help us win, to name a few. Unless you consider all wargaming pointless, then why not accept solo play, one on one social competition, tournaments, mass scenario battles – – based on historical events or not. Aren't we all just one big (actually not really that big) happy family. |
