GW Contrast Paints experiment. 1:285 model of a T64. I gave this model an undercoat of Corax White. Then a heavy coat of the contrast "Militarum Green." This is clearly just a heavily pigmented wash. At over $7.00 USD per pot, not really anything I'd bother with in this scale. I already make my own washes for just that purpose.

Yes, the cost is very high for what you get. Yet, it appears if you put a GW brand logo on something it is now worth twice as much …

I do like the effect you got.

Prime what and apply a wash, you'll get the same effect, at least on 1:285

$7.00 USD each???

Hope it's at least a 4+ ounce bottle.

$7.80 USD each in my game store.

And no, normal size GW bottle.

What other wash would you compare it against?

EC, could you do a side-by-side of this and a prime/wash, which you suggest would look the same on 6mm?

thanks
andy

@Syrinx0: I was comparing it to home made washes.

@Andy Skinner:

I could do that. To be clear though, this "Contrats Paint" *is* just a prime/wash system.

@Thresher01:

My bad, It is a 16ml bottle where the Corax white I bought is 12ml for $4.50 USD. Side note: the Corax was already dried up in the bottle: I had a big rubbery blob and the rest was like molasses. So I'm trying to get GW to replace it…

Overall, is it wirth it? I don't think so.

20+ years ago "stain painting" was the new thing. Basically it meant priming in white, then using washes on the main colors. So dark blue and light blue for Union troops. Then just paint in the details over that.

I'll post pics, but I'm getting the exact same result by base coating infantry in tan, then doing a brown wash.

The other issue is colors: the colors are fantasy oriented, so no Olive Drab, for example. Lots of reds, yellows and blues, not that many greens, browns or grays. So at nearly $8 USD each, I'll just use a wash.

EC, the effect you got is nice, but the price/benefit gap is too big for me. I think you're right about sticking to washes. I have seen some fantasy miniatures painted with these when I was at Pegasus, and they were particularly effective on things like dragons.
